The Line in Between | Anne Onas
For a democratic country the rights and freedom of the people is given importance if they feel that this is threatened then this people would likely to revolt. This could be an effect of what happen to us in the past, the martial law where our rights are deprived and now we do our best not to let it happen again. Last September 3, 2016 the President proclaimed the state of lawless ness due to the Davao bombing that killed 14 people and injured 71. This proclamation gives more power to the military and police in stopping terrorism and drugs in the country with the specifications of the president. Many people have their curiosity sparked with this proclamation. One, they are afraid that this could lead to martial law. Two, with this proclamation people are afraid that the rights of people may be affected.
There is a thin line between the question that we are trying in to answer. Is this proclamation would lead to endangering our rights and freedom?. Team superpowers answers this question with a No, this will not endanger our rights for we have to take note that the proclamation done by the President is to ensure the safety of the people and to prevent terrorist attack in the future. Furthermore, according to Sen. Gordon the leader of the Blue Ribbon Committee there will be a system of check and balance allowing the Senate to be open to receive and to probe in cases of abuses of the police and military in the state of lawlessness. The general public seems to abide with the request of the President to stop and follow the instructions of the police and military during checkup points. For they understand that this is for their safety.
In the end what is needed to do is to balance the security measures against terrorist attack, the war on drugs with the freedom and rights of the people. The line in between this issue this is to ensure that the rights of the people are protected and they think that their rights are not violated. One wrong from the police and military will surely cause and uproar from the people, something we wish we don’t want to see.
