HEADLINESBrunei, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam all have competing, in some cases overlapping, claims. The issue of the South China Sea is becoming more complex each day. 80% of the disputed waters were claimed by China through their nine-dash line. The South China Sea is rich in natural resources and is geographically strategic. Thus, China is building artificial islands, which are not just an insult to the countries claiming but will also affect the marine environment.
China was angry to the ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration as it favors the Philippines. The court upheld nearly all of the 15 points on which the Philippines approached the Court in 2013. China boycotted the proceedings, questioning the Court’s jurisdiction and publicly claiming historic rights to the South China Sea and its resources. Even though the Philippines won the case against China, Chinese are still in charge of the Islands and will hardly recognise the decisions of the PCA. Instead, they become more aggressive and won’t let the decision affect their activities in the Islands. As for the Philippines, what can our country do? We, the team superpowers come up with an advocacy that will surely help the Philippines in this battle. IRFS 141 TEDbitThe IRFS 141 students under Atty. Capistrano were having TEDbit speeches, the TEDbit speeches ranges from Filipino, Bisaya and English. In relation to these speeches is to show a relevant video that would serve as a “snippet” of the teams advocacy. Team Superpower, provided a video that mainly talks about the importance of South China Sea not just between the Philippines and China but also to the countries involved in the dispute.
In understanding the issue and why team superpower advocates to Rally for International Support, this video will discuss the role of United States and other international actors in the dispute. In order to pursue the team's advocacies, an open letter was also provided by team superpower addressed to the Philippine Government specifically the Department of Foreign Affairs.
